About
Revealed on the French stage thanks to the Monfort (Paris) in 2013, the DAKH DAUGHTERS are now pursuing an international career (Europe, USA, Canada). Initially students of Vlad Troistsky at the Kyiv Conservatory, they went on to join Dakh Theatre, a leading Ukrainian company known for its militant creations.
The Dakh Daughters have already created numerous works combining song, music and theater, and offer audiences the spectacle of their fertile, enterprising anger.
In 2015, they collaborated with Lucie Berelowitstch, director and co-director of the CDN de Vire, on the creation of Antigone after Sophocles, then, in 2016, with Stéphane Ricordel, director and co-director of the Monfort, on “Terabak de Kyiv”, a cabaret/circus creation.
After a meeting in Kyiv, Pierre Thilloy wrote arrangements for symphony orchestra for several of their songs. This fabulous encounter between their rock and classical worlds premiered in January 2022 with the Orchestre national d’Avignon-Provence.
That same year, Olivier Py invited them to share the stage with Angélique Kidjo and the Orchestre national Avignon-Provence for the closing night of the Festival d’Avignon and his show Miss Knife et ses soeurs.
On their arrival in France after the Russian aggression, with the support of the CDN de Vire, the group created Danse Macabre (2022) under the direction of Vlad Troitsky. In 2023, Lucie Berelowitsch directed them in an adaptation of Pirandello’s play Les Géants de la Montagne.
Concerts
After the famous show FREAK CABARET (2014), UKRAINE FIRE was created in March 2022 at the Scène Nationale de Bar-le-duc. Today, the show becomes BREAK THE ROCK evolving with new compositions reflecting the Dakh Daughters’ life as exiled artists.
Sometimes it feels like we, Ukrainian actors, directors, artists, “ambassadors of Ukraine” at all international festivals, concerts, are a group of obsessed people bursting into the calm cultural life of the world and shouting: “War, war, war, look… war,” interrupting people’s normal activities and discussions about topics that truly interest them.
The experience of war, which we have not yet fully comprehended and carry within us like an incurable disease. It’s not visible from the outside yet, but it constantly hurts inside… it bleeds…
We have to shout “war, war…” and find new ways to surprise, impress, and shock…to reach the heart, to the human, to the heavens.
I am not crying. The tears fall on their own.
My country is being shot at in front of everyone’s eyes! The murderer country – russia
A russian missile – that deliberately targets a children’s hospital in Kyiv.
A russian missile – …kills us, destroys, burns, drowns…
At some point, it may become too late for the world.
“Believe those who threaten to kill you.”
From their first show FREAK CABARET, a festive, fiery and ferocious concentration of women claiming their power and freedom, the DAKH DAUGHTERS today draw a strength of resistance, even if the beautiful energy of the beginning has been displaced, shattered by war.
But their need to express the world is still alive, and now meets the urgent need to bear witness to reality through art. The fronts of war must be opposed by the fronts of art.
